The ongoing
sculpture
project of
John McEwen

Sculpture became and remains for me both bridge and anchor in my course through life. In my beginnings I have been fortunate on a number of grounds. I went to an art college and not a university. The vibrancy of friendships that began at the Ontario College of Art, that formed A Space, and that continued to date meant that normal institutional rewards were not the overwhelming determinants that they surely would have been elsewhere.

I believe that every time gets its own hand of cards and my beginnings were clearly cards that were given to me. Of course time itself is a card and my beginning time allowed me a slowness of development that shaped my initial decisions about the complex role that art might play in one’s life.

Over time that complexity allowed me to assimilate some of the visual rhetoric of minimalism and with it invent the animal vehicle . What had lain flat in classic minimalism could be turned upright. What had been abstract became animate. What had been impersonal could become personal.
