A space for the imagination. In his book Thinking Animals, Paul Shepard describes the argument, taken up by others, that animals made us human. In his telling, the evolution of animals were at the root of the evolution of consciousness.They remain critical to the human mind.

In the three parts of After Babel, 1993, a gift from the City of Toronto to the City of Montreal, the animal provides a ‘clearing’ in the forest of language.

In The Ballad of Ice & Water, 2008 both animals and the first nations inhabit the land following the receding glaciers.

In The Water Road, 2002, given by the City of Mississauga to Kariya, (its sister city in Japan), the bear is more than cargo as it surveys the history of the fur trade.t
